Roger Absalom

Roger Absalom (1929-2009), a British historian, served as an officer during the Italian campaign, an experience which allowed him to gain first-hand knowledge of the Italian Resistance. Absalom lived in Italy in the 1950s before moving back to England, where he taught Italian language, literature and history at Anglia Polytechnic University from 1960 to 1973. In 1973, he moved to Sheffield Hallam University, continuing his teaching and serving as the Chair of the Department of Italian Studies. Absalom's research on Italian history focused on World War II and post-conflict reconstruction. The author of numerous publications on this topic, Absalom was a consultant for the European Commission in Brussels and a collaborator for the Uguccione Ranieri di Sorbello Foundation, for whom he edited several publications, including the catalogue for the photography exhibition "Chiaroscuri della Liberazione: Volti di donne e bambini, 1943-48". He frequently returned to Italy for his work.
